The location of the Centre is in the ?akisqnuk Administration building. The Centre houses several Internet linked computers, where Community members can access the Internet at no cost. Also, here the members can use other computers not Internet linked, to browse and use available Ktunaxa and the Secwepemc Language programmes. The purpose of these Learning Centres that are being established in the four Communities will be for the Nation members to access information gathered by the Evaluation Leads. The project was funded by the Canadian Institute of Health Research and was assisted by the University of British Columbia’s personnel, graduate and undergraduate students, and project administrators. The project has been created through the partnership between the Ktunaxa Nation and the UBC Division of Continuing Professional Development and Knowledge Translation. (UBC CPD-KT). It is titled, ‘Community Learning Centres (CLC): A Model of Community Engagement in Health, Education and Training’. Sandra Jarvis-Selinger is the nominated principal investigator of this project, along with principal and co-investigators, Kendall Ho, Helen Novak Lauscher, Don Maki, Katherine Wisener, Yolanda Liman, and Elizabeth Stacy.
The purpose of this multi-year study is to create and evaluate four CLCs to understand: 1) how a CLC is implemented in a community; 2) how community members engage with the CLCs, and; 3) how effective CLCs are in promoting community health in a First Nations context.
